Foundation In Knifemaking

A five day immersive experience in knifemaking.  Designed for those who are serious about getting a solid start or building confidence to expand their knifemaking. This workshop will cover the knifemaking process in detail, from both stock removal, and forging perspectives.

$1,800.00

During the first three days of the workshop we will make two knives.  The first will be a forged Gyuto chef’s knife, with a Wa style handle; the second a stock removal hunting knife, with a guard and sculpted handle.

Days One to Three, we will cover:

  •     Design consideration
  •     Material selection
  •     Forging blades
  •     Profiling blades
  •     Surface grinding
  •     Bevel grinding
  •     Squaring up, transition and plunges
  •     Heat treatment – hardening and tempering by different methods
  •     Finish grinding
  •     Hand sanding
  •     Fitting guards
  •     Handle fitting and gluing up
  •     Handle ergonomics and grinding
  •     Sharpening

Day Four, we will light the forges again and you will forge out four more blades to your own designs.  We will be asking you to focus on:

  •     Visualising the end product
  •     Moving metal and creating a shape as close as possible to the end product
  •     Hammering in plunges and bevels
  •     Proper hammer techniques
  •     Heat treating the blades

You will also get to use the hydraulic press and power hammer!

Day five, we will take the blades from Day Four and grind them.  The focus will be:

  •     Different grinding techniques
  •     Edge geometry
  •     Different grind types – there advantages and disadvantages

You will be able to take these blades from Days Four & Five home and finish them, along with two completed knives from Days One to Three.

Throughout the workshop we will also be passing on many knifemaker hacks to save time and frustration.  We will also be teaching you how to regulate your own performance, monitor your personal progress and how to analyse results to improve your skill and understanding.

This isn’t a YouTube experience; it is five days of hot, hard, sweaty labour. At the end of the five days you should walk away with a solid foundation to build on as a knifemaker.
